Nudge vs AlgoTrace, LeetCode Hint Engine, and grip duck
Last updated: August 13, 2026
Nudge, AlgoTrace, LeetCode Hint Engine, and grip duck all try to make AI assistance more useful for interview practice than pasting a full solution into your editor. They take meaningfully different routes: adaptive hints, a broader learning workspace, a fixed hint ladder, or a strict Socratic approach gate.
We checked each product's own website or Chrome Web Store listing on August 13, 2026. This is a factual snapshot, not a hands-on review: when a public source does not answer something clearly, we say so. Products change, so if something here is stale, let us know.

| AI access | Managed by Nudge. No API key setup; editor code is shared only when you type @code. | Request allowances vary by tier. Its public pricing also lists bring-your-own-key support. | BYOK: Groq, Gemini, OpenAI, Claude, or Cohere. Keys are stored locally, according to its listing. | BYOK: Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google. | Supported sites | leetcode.com, leetcode.cn | LeetCode and Codeforces are advertised. The same page also mentions GeeksForGeeks, so exact coverage is unclear. | LeetCode, GeeksForGeeks, and TakeYouForward. | LeetCode. |
| Coaching style | Adaptive inline hints and a hint-first side panel. @code lets Pro users deliberately add editor context. | In-page coach that reads problem, code, and test output; web chat can continue with session context. | Three progressive hints: general approach, relevant data structure, then partial pseudocode. | Locks the editor until you explain an approach, asks one Socratic question at a time, then debriefs submissions. |
| Practice tracking | Basic solve and hint activity; no spaced-repetition system. | Notebooks, TraceBoards, DeepTrace, and TraceCards are advertised. | Can save accepted solutions to a connected GitHub repository. | The separate grip web app adds weak-topic tracking and spaced repetition. |
| Account / setup | No account for guest access; Google sign-in raises the free allowance and is required for Pro. | Account requirements are not clearly stated on the public product page. | No product account requirement is stated; setup requires an AI API key. | No grip duck account; setup requires an AI API key. |
Which one fits your practice style?
- Consider Nudge if you want a managed extension with no API-key setup, adaptive help beside your current attempt, and deliberate editor-code sharing through @code.
- Consider AlgoTrace if you want a wider study workspace around the extension, including notes, boards, deeper analysis, and review cards.
- Consider LeetCode Hint Engine if you prefer a predictable three-step hint ladder, BYOK, multi-site support, and automatic GitHub solution saving.
- Consider grip duck if you want a firm constraint against shortcutting: it makes you explain an approach before coding and keeps its coaching Socratic.
The trade-offs that matter
A managed plan is simpler, while BYOK gives you direct control over the model account and usage bill. A fixed hint ladder is predictable; adaptive and Socratic systems can respond more closely to your attempt. Practice-management features are valuable if you want one place to review over time, but they may be unnecessary if you already track practice elsewhere. None of those choices is universally better.
